Snoring affects millions of people in all countries of the world and also has a knock-on effect on anybody unlucky enough to have to sleep with them.  Remedies for snoring are sometimes easy but can also be complicated and some are just downright peculiar, with surgery on the nostrils or mouth also existing.

Mouth or nose surgery is likely to leave you looking like you've been 12 rounds with a champion boxer for a while postoperatively, but the operation is worth the discomfort if successful as your partner is less likely to punch you because they cannot get to sleep.

Men are the worst culprits for snoring, with women being the ones most likely to  have to listen to the shocking noise as the men are asleep at the time, however constant snoring means that the sufferer is waking up several times a night without realising it and they don't get decent REM sleep meaning they are tired and grumpy the following morning.

So what can be done about the snoring issue without resorting to homicide?  Several things, but before you go looking online for remedies for snoring, its worth doing some basic detective work to try and realise whether the culprit is a nose or mouth snorer.

The best way of deciding whether somebody is a mouth or nose snorer is to actually listen to them snoring if you can resist the temptation to murder them with the nearest pillow. If their mouth is closed and they are snoring it means the snoring is coming from restricted airways in the nostrils and they are officially a nose snorer.

If you live with a nose snorer, some of the remedies fore snoring are nasal strips or nostril dilators which look weird, but then he probably looks a bit weird anyway.  If he falls asleep on his back and this causes the snoring, sharpen your elbows in readiness for jabbing him in the ribs or sew a ball into his pyjama jacket to make him roll over.

The other kind of snorers are mouth snorers and these are the ones who produce the seriously headbanging levels of noise that can be heard at the other end of the house and sound like a jumbo jet taking off. The noise is due to the loose flesh of the throat and tongue base vibrating with each intake of breath.

Some of the reasons behind mouth snoring include overindulging in alcohol before you go to bed or smoking cigarettes or cigars, and putting on a lot of weight and becoming obese can also be a factor, although there is a condition called sleep apnoea which causes snoring because the sufferer stops breathing momentarily while asleep.
